Special Guests

  • Dirty Socks Club - Bozeman's original climbing club founded in the early 1970s - or as some have been known to say, "a drinking club with a climbing problem." Virtually every five-star gem of traditional climbing anywhere in Montana was put up by one of these pioneering climbers. Many of the founders and original members of the Dirty Socks Club will be around all festival, climbing, drinking, socializing and sharing stories of first ascents, bravery, chicken-shittery, outright lies and general tall tales. If you get some of them in the right mood, you might even hear of legendary bridge-blowing and pig-rustling. The Statute of Limitations should be up by now. We hope...
  • Special Guests - Stay tuned for confirmation on a number of exciting personalities and climbers you won't want to miss!

"Dirtbag. The Legend of Fred Beckey"

The Bozeman Ice Festival is proud to present the Montana premier of "Dirtbag. The Legend of Fred Beckey" on Saturday, December 9th in the beautiful Emerson Crawford Theater.

Be sure to get your tickets early as this show is destined to sell out quick. Fred is a honorary life-member of the infamous Montana "Dirty Socks Club" who pioneered most of the great Montana climbing routes from boulders and ice climbs to the biggest alpine routes. Founding members of the DSC will be on-hand to introduce "Dirtbag" and share stories of a climbing life fully-lived with Beckey. Tickets to this once-in-a-lifetime screening is included for all Hyalite Clinic participants.

Fred Beckey is the original American “Dirtbag” climber whose name has evoked mystery, adulation and vitriol since the 1940s. Beckey’s stubborn, singular quest to conquer peaks meant a solitary life on the road, where he left a long trail of scorned climbing partners and lost lovers in his wake. The groundbreaking life story of this rebel athlete, who inspired generations of climbers to head for the mountains with his monumental first ascents and eloquent books, is told for the first time in this exclusive documentary film.

Mugs Stump Award

Join us Saturday, December 9 in the evening as we are joined by very special guest and long-time friend of the fest, Conrad Anker to announce the winners of this year's Mugs Stump Alpine Climbing Award. Established in 1993 to honor the late Mugs Stump, each year the Mugs Stump Award provides grants to a select number of individuals and teams whose proposed climbs present an outstanding challenge—a first ascent, significant repeat or first alpine-style ascent—with special emphasis placed on climbers leaving no trace of their passage.

Sponsored by Alpinist Magazine, Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd., Mountain Gear, Patagonia, Inc., and W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc., the Mugs Stump Award encourages men, women and teams from North America to submit their applications for a part of this year’s $33,500 in grant funding. The committee is currently accepting application until December 1 for climbs taking place between February 1, 2018 and March 1, 2019. Visit Mugs Stump Award for details.

Grivel Ice Tool & Screw Sharpening Service

Visit our Heritage Sponsor Grivel every night in the Emerson Ballroom for our unique Ice Tool & Screw Sharpening Service with craftsman Phillip Dobson. Talk to gear experts on how to best tune your gear or have Phil do it for it. You can leave it with us for pick up in the morning. Stay tuned here for more details and how you can send your gear in prior to December 1st to be ready for pick up when you arrive in Bozeman.

Legendary Sunday Wrap Party

No event is complete with a Wrap Party. Over the years this celebration has become one of the highlights of the week as sponsors, athletes, organizers and participants come together one last time as a tribe to carbo-load and toast a week of life-changing experiences. Following dinner we will be treated by the show of a lifetime from the original, if not legendary, Dirty Socks Club featuring MT pioneers Pat Callis, David Vaughn, Doug McCarty, Brian Leo and more.

Click here to purchase tickets. The party features a gourmet meal from a local restaurant, tasty adult beverages, and one of the great gear raffles in a town known for its swag. Join us Sunday, December 10 as we celebrate the 2017 recipient of the 10th annual Guy Lacelle Hyalite Service Award and the final drawing for the legendary Stoke Package. See who comes in naked and leaves an ice climber!
