Board of Directors - President & Secretary
Born and raised in the Beartooth Mountains of Montana, “JoJo” was one of the original featured athletes at the very first Ice Fest. He has been involved every year since as a Title Sponsor Rep, Location Guide, and Director from 2006 to 2017.
Author of the seminal ice climbing books “Waterfall Ice” and “Winter Dance” as well as the Crag Profile “House of Hyalite” in Alpinist #36, JoJo started ice climbing when the gear sucked and has put up significant waterfall and alpine first ascents from the Yukon to Newfoundland. JoJo’s proudest contribution to the sport was in 1990 when he completed the very first formal studies on the safety of the “V-thread” while at the University of Calgary. Overnight, this study revolutionized rappel and anchor practices in the sport worldwide.
Since 2003 he has lead the effort to keep the Hyalite Canyon Road from being closed in winter, founded Friends of Hyalite in 2010, and helped forge the unique road plowing collaboration we all enjoy today. In 2007 the Access Fund presented Joe with the “Reese Martin Memorial Award” as the Regional Coordinator of the Year.
Joe holds a degree from the University of Calgary after which he spent nearly a decade in the Canadian Rockies as the resident American route poacher and authored numerous guidebooks to rock and ice. Since 2013 he has worked for the Greater Yellowstone Coalition in Bozeman, MT to protect Yellowstone National Park and River from gold mining.
